Position Summary

Working under the leadership of the Special Assistant to the President, plans, directs and coordinates the activities of the Minority Achievement Center by ensuring goals and objectives are accomplished within prescribed time frame and parameters.  This position supports and supervises all of the Lone Star College - University Park Minority Achievement Center program activities, including the professional development activities, special events and related campaigns that increase student success. 

Job Functions

  1. Researches best and innovative practices and designs strategies for addressing and achieving performance goals, such as increasing enrollments and retention of underrepresented populations.

  2. Acts in a project manager capacity bringing internal and/or external constituents together for group learning and planning discussions.

  3. Identifies trends and gaps between ideal and current performance.  Works with key stakeholders to strategically plan methods for achieving goals.

  4. Works with a variety of internal and external groups (ex. high school liaisons, student focus groups and universities) to identify factors contributing to low-performance measures and implements strategies to address issues. Works with school districts to increase enrollment.

  5. Develops and implements marketing strategies that target student recruitment. Maintains a system and database for tracking prospective students, from initial contact through enrollment.

  6. Responsible for development and implementation of a variety of large-scale events, including but not limited to, determining appropriate keynote speakers, presenters, event locations, etc.

  7. Collects, analyzes and provides a variety of materials, reports and presentations on enrollment, demographic and other related data.  Provides a population analysis used in determining the targeted recruitment efforts; analyzes enrollment trends.

  8. Evaluates a variety of activities to determine the effectiveness of the program.  Makes recommendations for improvements needed.

  9. Advises cohort of students on a campus-wide basis. Meets with students on a regular basis to track academic progress and success.

  10. Tracks and provides data on cohort group including success, retention and completion rates.

  11. May represent the department at a variety of community and student outreach events.  

  12. Establishes a means for all levels of the college to understand and support the program's goals and policies.

  13. Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and at least 3 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated success at program management, working with populations of underprepared students who may be facing any number of barriers to completing their education.    

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education.

  • Experience in workforce education.

  • Results-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to focus on specific goals within a big picture view of higher education.

  • Understanding of the needs of high schools, colleges and the communities served.

  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships in the course of performing assigned duties.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of current management practices, database management systems, software used for analysis of data, marketing and recruitment strategies and data interpretation and evaluation.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in a demanding work environment.

  • Ability to assume responsibility for independent actions.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and maintain confidential information. 


Hiring Salary is $44,058. 

Work Schedule & Conditions

PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment.

Internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position.

Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards.
